Basically? Regular treadmill exercise makes it harder to regain the weight you have lost even when you eat more calories. This is above and beyond the effects you would expect from just using more calories through exercise, at least in rats.
In the study, treadmill exercise lessened the impact of the decreased metabolism that comes with weight loss and made it harder for the rats to regain weight that they had lost through a restricted calorie diet. The test rats' bodies actually used energy more like lean rats than like the other "relapsed" rats.0
