New Runner Tips, please :)

Not only am I a new runner, but I am in the process of trying to lose weight and become fit as well. I have been working on my distance running at the gym. I usually give myself 3 miles on the treadmill, running/walking at about 4.1 mph and before that, 3.6 mph. The problem: I can't seem to run anything over a mile without being absolutely exhausted and unable to run further. I thought I could solve this by running shorter distances over a longer period of time, but despite the exhaustion, I really feel comfortable and great after running a mile; my body is ready for it!
Additionally, a friend, who is more experienced runner and very fit, wants me to run a half marathon with her at the end of June. I haven't signed up for it because I just don't think I am ready. I think I should run a 5k first, and actually run outside, something I haven't done yet. At this point, I just want to run 3 miles without stopping. What's some good tips on training so I can successfully complete this short distance? Thanks for your feedback!

I'm sort of in the same boat, trying to work on my distance running. Have you looked at couch to 5k? it's program might be a little basic for you if you can already run a full mile, but you can always escalate it to fit your needs. It' works in increments of walking/running/walking again, and you can always customize it in a way that works best for you.
The biggest thing is consistency. The only way to run better/faster/further is to keep running. If you realize you have a certain weakness, mine is breathing control, you can also try supplemental exercises to improve that specific weakness. Swimming and breathing exercises have made a noticeable difference.
Endurance is a key factor in running, and maybe going hard at a stride machine or elliptical for 30mins to an hour will build up more endurance in your body, which would translate into better running ability.0 -
Yep, I use the elliptical for at least 2 miles, treadmill for 3 miles, and stationary bike for 10-20 miles. This schedule occurs 3 days a week (M,W,F)..
Thanks for the couch to 5k info, I will look it up now!0
