Caloric Intake to Make up for Exercise

I am very new to all this, but what does it mean to make up for the caloric loss in exercise? If I only eat 1400 calories a day, and I lose 400 calories a day due to exercise, does that mean I should eat an extra 200 calories to make my 1200 caloric intake? Because that has got me a little confused.
