bit of a conundrum on weight loss

I am a complete novice when it comes to trying to understand weight loss, I have read many interesting articles on this site about BMR and TDEE etc. Anyway I have been guided by the support given by you guys and have tried to stick to the plan as suggested.
I also completely understand that my body needs to adjust to the change and not too worried that over the last week I have put on 3 pounds. .

I started myfitnesspal plan 197 pounds and over three weeks I have lost 13 pounds and now gained 3 pounds
My waist measured 42 inches and last week measured 39 inches. After gaining the three pounds my waist now measures 38.5 yes I have lost a further half inch round my waist. Not complaining of course but can someone explain to me how this conundrum works?

    Its like a well tuned car.
    The better you eat and sleep the better relationship youll have on a hormonal level to lose extra fat.
