.... who told me I wasn't actually burning fat while doing the majority of my cardio as HIIT (high intensity interval training). Example: Go max speed for 1 minute, recover for 2 minutes, max speed for 1, recover for two, for about 20 minutes. In following sessions, you either reduce your recovery time or increase your speed/energy output during throttle times, resulting in exhausted muscles, accelerated calorie burn both before and after exercise, and - yes - increased fat calorie burn*.

* and a nice @$$.

    Thanks for the link - I cringe every time I see a post about wanting to stay in the "fat burning zone".

    I prefer to stay in the Unicorn Zone, those extra rainbows really add up.

    I can't tell if this is the correct article since work blocks the link, but there's a Bodybuilding.com article on HIIT that cites peer-reviewed sources about its benefits. Hopefully this is it.

    I love doing HIIT! I play soccer also so i can only do it once or twice a week so my legs don't get burnt out. It definitely works those glutes! Plus it keeps things interesting :-)

    I also thank you for the link. It was in the very last paragraph that my questions about fitness training got answered. I'm not an elite athlete, but my trainer who give me routines to work out at home follows these concepts and I dropped 50 pounds quickly. More importantly I went from 41% body fat to 29%. Major victory for me. Am now working to get the last bit off.

    Here's the article I was looking for.
    A study from Australia reported that females following a 20-minute HIIT program, consisting of 8-second sprints followed by 12 seconds of rest, lost six times more body fat than the group who followed a 40-minute cardio program performed at a constant intensity of 60 percent of their maximum heart rate.
