Calories Burned Question- Need MAJOR Help.

Okay everyone. I'm trying to figure out how many calories I burn per hour resting. I found a link to the mathematical problem at http://www.livestrong.com/article/221621-formula-for-calories-burned-during-exercise/.

Here is the equation:

Women use the following formula: Calories Burned = [(Age x 0.074) -- (Weight x 0.05741) + (Heart Rate x 0.4472) -- 20.4022] x Time / 4.184.

Using the formula my equation is:

20x0.074 – 279x0.05741 + 92x0.4472 – 20.4022 x 60 / 4.184.

This comes out to be:

1.48
-
16.01739
+
41.1424
-
20.4022
x
60
/
4.184

=

88.95 Calories

That's 2,134.8 Calories I burn per day sitting on my rump.

I eat 1,530 calories per day as requested by MFP.

My GOAL on MFP is to lose 2 pounds per week.

By following the simple equation of:

Calories I burn resting: 2,134.8
-
Calories I eat per day: 1,530
=
604.8 Calorie Difference

There is 3,500 Calories in One Pound

So....

604.8 x 7 days a week = 4,233.6 / 3,500 = 1.20 Pounds NOT 2.

Am I doing something wrong? Somebody please help me with this. Is my MFP statistics wrong? How do I update it?

Sorry for the long post. I just need some help!

Thank y'all! :)

I don't believe that MFP goes to that much trouble to figure out your caloric consumption for weight loss. It probably uses something like BMR and TDEE. Have you tried those to see what it works out to?

    Oh goody, maths!

Ok, I didn't see you take into account doing anything but sitting on your rump. Which, you don't do right?

MFP is probably using the lifestyle choice you chose (Sedentary, lightly active, etc) to determine what kind of deficit you need. I'm sure you don't sit on your rump all day/week.

Thats alot of math lol personally i think just follow your diet and exercise goals your body has a mind of its own and it wont guarantee that you'll lose two lbs a week sometimes even following my goals i dont lose anything and sometimes i gain try not to get too caught up in the math lol i do think its not adding up to two lbs kus you dnt just sit on ur butt all day you walk and do other thibgs so you're probably burning more calories than that

Finding the numbers are all fine and dandy, but sometimes our bodies do not work the way numbers do. Sometimes we will lose like the numbers say, sometimes our body has to catch up and we will not lose anything, sometimes we hold onto water, sometimes the calories we eat are not good, sometimes we build muscle, and so on. Try not to get caught up with the numbers, but work towards feeling better.

There is my two cents! =)

Yaknow, something isn't right with the math. It isn't really possible that I'm burning 5000+ cals by sitting on my @ss.

    [(41 x .074) - (120 x .05741) + (90 x .4472) - 20.4022] x 60/4.134

    [3.034 - 6.8892 + 40.248 - 20.4022] x 14.5138 = 15.9906 x 14.5138 = 232.08 x 24 = 5570 = What the????

Something isnt adding up. How much weight do you have to lose? Your resting calories is as high as mine and i am 200 lbs, 5'11" and a guy @12% body fat. Unless that includes your exercise calories.

Ok, I even went back to the site to double check the math sine mine came up with 3877.

However, when I plug in my running heart rate (about 165ish) then it tells me that I'm burning 674 an hour, and for a 190lb person, thats not as far off as the other.

I think one thing that needs to be taken into account is that while youre sleeping your heart beats about 10% slower.

I think the only way to get the true number, or close to it, would be to wear a heart rate monitor for 24 hours of a typical day to see what you actually burn.

Plus, the other poster is right, as the weight goes down, the number seems to go up in direct correlation.
  • MFP takes in to account your "lifestyle" as well, so if you are sedentary they recommend consuming less calories a day compared to if you are active.
  • Did you go to www.fat2fitradio.com/tools yet? I got my calculations from there. They are really close to MFP
