This is Katie Makkai defining "pretty." It gets really good at the end, very powerful. What do you guys think?

    Something about the way she talks bothers me. I think it's along the lines of trying too hard.

    Anyways, I'm glad I got through it. The end was good.

    I think it is, of course, true, that society puts way too much of an emphasis on girls being pretty. But it is women that perpetuate this more than anyone... Guys pretty much have a minimum standard (which can be flexible) and you are pretty. Girls, though, we are vicious. Her calves are too small, her eyebrows aren't even, her right boob is bigger than the left, her butt is too big, her butt is too small... we can find something to criticize about anyone... and a good portion of our criticisms are physical. I think no matter how hard you try to tell your daughter that she needs to be so much more than pretty, she will see that she still needs to be pretty too. And I don't see any good way to change this without women disallowing their friends to behave this way and ceasing the behavior themselves.
