Ab/stregth training question

Ok, so with strength training I have noticed that the top of my abs are getting quite hard without doing a single sit up. Great, right? However, I noticed not a single thing about my lower abs. They never feel like they are being used during any of my strength training, I just can't feel it and am not noticing any difference. I don't know if that's because I feel the burn much more with the upper abs when working out.
So.... are ab work outs really that useless as I keep reading about? Does anyone who does strength training still use them? I thought maybe I should use ab moves using weights? Any suggestions or does it just take longer for your lowers abs to have a difference and keep at what I'm doing?

My lower abs are toning up nicely. One of my strength training exercises: flat and incline presses/flyes on an exercise ball. It's one helluva workout.0

I don't do crunches, but I add Pilates mat work to my strength training. I feel like it helps me with posture form and core strength.0
