Hey everybody, I was told about this app by my friend who needed to keep track of calories and consume more protein. This app is great, and I'm telling everyone I know to try it out. About 6 years ago I decided to change my lifestyle to stay alive, and with my own ideas and discipline lost about 25 pounds the first month and probably another 15 pounds the second month until I lost 60 pounds.

What I like about this app is that I had no idea what my exact caloric intake was, and now I'm on a gaining streak over the last three years so maintaining proper calories and proportions is crucial to building muscle without added fat. At my lowest after the 60 pound loss I weighed 150 pounds, and now I weigh a stable 174 lbs.

I have been writing a Yoga blog for over two years called Metal Yoga, feel free to visit, and drop me a friend request on MFP if you'd like some tips or motivation.

I did a yoga/pilates class last semester with my boyfriend. :) I have been leery to do classes since he passed away... just terrified of memories and having a breakdown in front of everyone. Meh. I do have the schedule for classes at a local studio taped to my door... Must work up the courage. :)
  • I love yoga....I am trying to lose 40 lbs and need some support I will add you and visit your blog. Thanks and good luck.

I do yoga 2 times a week. It is great at stretching you out and man do you get a sweat going. Welcome and good luck!

Hi, welcome to MFP. I really feel yoga was instrumental in my health journey. I started at 210 pounds and worked down to 185 by myself. Becoming frustrated I enlisted the help of a monthly workout routine from a trainer at a gym. At that time I started strength training X3 a week (circuit style), cardio X5, and a yoga class x3 a week. (power yoga...don't know the proper name). I really think yoga accelerated by progress...the strengthening of different muscles and all that stretching. MFP is a great place to find like minded people. Add me if you'd like some support and encouragement.

I told the story of my weight loss in a fairly linear fashion, but the truth is that somewhere in the process I once fell of the wagon and gained back 40 pounds...the next time I fell off for 20 pound gain....the next time it was only 7 pounds. I believe the starting and stopping of a healthy life style was necessary for me to learn all the lessons I needed to. When you lose pounds, I really believe you shed more than weight. You shed "stuff" that makes us fat...for me it was many layers of "stuff"...each time I came back I uncovered more and more layers of psychological barriers to my goals. Each time I overcame...learned those lessons and now I'm just 5 pounds away from my goal. Not the fastest weight loss in history, but I feel that if I slip again, it will NEVER be more than a few pounds. Its a wonderful place to be.

The secret as you well know is to keep coming back. Because one day, it will be your last time to try again...you'll make your goal and keep it.

    Blessings.

I can see how that would be very difficult. I personally have no interest in going to a Yoga class; I've only done Yoga at home alone, slowly teaching myself, except for less than a handful of rare occasions involving friends and classes. In my opinion, Yoga is an internal journey for the individual that is made more challenging or impossible in a class setting. Instruction is crucial, but it was meant to be done upon waking beside your bed wearing a gauze diaper. If you can build up the courage alone at home, it will set you up for a class setting, which can be extremely emotional anyway. It is quite ordinary to have anyone or everyone break down and cry at some point in a Yoga class.

    Thanks, got it!

I also find that 2X a week feels optimal, and it keeps my core strong for better strength training without injury!

This is a fantastic story, and I had the same feeling of losing more than weight, dropping off pounds as well as whatever sunk in during that weight gain. I had a friend meet me and not even recognize me, saying it was the most beautiful deception.
