burning cardio calories

My trainer told me that I am not burning enough calories on the elliptical. I use it on level 4 for like 30 minutes and he said to up it to level 6 or more and move my stride from the default 21 to 26. I have done that twice so far and the calories aren't moving up very much. Anyone else have any ideas?
