I just put in for an extension on filing my federal, state and local taxes. I'm currently laid off and have absolutely no money to pay to have them prepared. I have to complete a 1040 form due to circumstances of 1099's and trying to start my own business that I must show a Schedule C for. I've never done this on my own and afraid I'll fill it out wrong. Is anyone out there good at filling out this form that if I have a question I could ask for assistance? Otherwise I'll have to wait til I'm back to work and pay someone to do it for me. I'm not sure if the documents IRS supplies to help you fill them out are "Dummy Proof".

Info about extensions. Note that an extension of time to file is not an extension of time to pay - you still have to pay your estimated tax due by the deadline. However, if you call the IRS, you may be able to work out a payment plan. And check out some of the websites for free filing - they make it very easy to complete the 1040 by just answering a series of questions. More info on free filing can be found at http://www.irs.gov/efile/index.html.

Thanks...I just went on line and filed for an extension. I realize I'll have to pay interest and a penalty on money owed. I wasn't aware there was websites for free filing for the 1040...I'll definitely check it out.

If you live near a university, a lot of the accounting students have to do taxes for free for classes. Call one and see!
