Pain Question

I don't know if this is the right forum, but since I *think* it's exercise related, I will ask here.

I am a beginning runner and yesterday I did my walk/run/walk. I had the usual discomfort in my shins and calves, I worked through it. Today when I woke up and stepped on the floor, I had sharp shooting pain in my left foot. It runs down the side of my foot from my pinky toe to my ankle. If I am just sitting it is a dull ache, but when I put weight on it I am in a lot of pain. I had a few errands to run today and was hobbling around the store. I came home early and elevated it.

Is this common?
Should I have xrays, or does it sound like a strained muscle?

Any advice welcome!!

Intense pain should not be common or normal. I would stay off it as much as possible and keep it elevated and iced. If it doesn't improve witha few days rest it's time to see your doc.

For your running make sure you are in the appropriate shoes and aren't doing too much, too soon.

It may be a stress fracture.

I was fitted properly for shoes at a running store. My old shoes were terrible! I was amazed at what a difference the right shoes can make.

I did do more yesterday than I have before, but I have been increasing my run cycles slowly. I have sprained my other ankle a few times in the last year, this is the first time I have had pain in the left foot. I don't remember stepping wrong, and was surprised by how painful it was.

I agree with ATL give it a couple days rest and ice and see if it gets better if not, head to the doctor.
