Simply put, you must cut down on saturated fats ( like animal protien) I switched to soy products. Also you do need to exercise to strengthen your heart and arteries (where plaque builds and weakens the walls) and there are things like chia seeds that help to lower it too. Unfortunately there's no magic pill, like getting in shape, it takes wise food choices and determination. Good luck!

Cholesterol is ONLY found in animal products...(meat and dairy). Cut these from your diet and your cholesterol will reduce.

When I was a strict Vegan (eating absolutely zero animal products) my cholesterol went from a healthy 4.9 to an amazing 3.2 in a very short time and consisted of only the good type of cholesterol.

80% of cholesterol is made by your liver. 20% comes from the food you eat. While your liver makes cholesterol from saturated fat and partially hydrogenated fat, if you are not taking in too many calories, your body will use the fat as energy before it is converted. therefore, as long as you have a healthy, balanced diet which includes only eating the number of calories you need, what you choose to eat will have very little effect on your cholesterol.

Dietary cholesterol is not the same thing as blood cholesterol. Fat doesn't get converted into blood cholesterol. I don't know where people get ideas like this.

Hey, you are making real strides in eating better and losing weight. That's awesome. So your cholesterol is a tiny bit high... It's not a huge deal at this point. If you're making an effort then it will show in your health. Eat well balanced meals and move around often. I wouldn't get frantic about finding a solution to your cholesterol specifically.

brilliant guys, some really good useful info now gone into this thread,,,,,, yes alot about cholesterol is still "unknown" scientist and health experts have only recently decided that eggs have good cholesterol (hdl) but yet no official scientific paper has been released to say exactly what hdl and ldl are every thing is seems to or appears to etc, HDL has only recently been classed as a lipoprotein, it "SEEMS" to reduce heart attacks, 1 theory (not as yet proved) is that it works as a lubricant on the semi lunar, tricuspid and bicuspid valves.

english and american heart foundations have done really interesting research into cholesterol,

I am in agreement with most of this post but there is no fixed 80/20 ratio of what you'll get dietarily and what the liver will produce. Your liver will produce what the body needs in the abscence of any other source. The exception being when the liver function is out of whack and over produces. It is a dynamic model, from everything that I've read, and not a static one. Activity and a dietary deficit to bring down weight will solve 90% of the problem (as a wild *kitten* guestimate but not in essence untrue) If you don't do that, doing other things like eating chia seeds (??) and some of the other helpful as well as (with all due respect) cockmaimy suggestions will just be a drop in the bucket.

this is from british heart foundation research
For most people, the amount of saturated fat they eat has much more of an impact on their cholesterol than eating foods that contain cholesterol, like eggs and shellfish.

Now your saying saturated fat can effect the levels of our cholesterol.....I thought you said saturated was cholesterol, which is it........anyway, yes saturated fat does effect our serum levels, for one it increases our HDL and increases the particle size of LDL's generally speaking (subfraction of vdLDL/Lp(a) which effects pattern A).......and all those people that have been consuming coconut oil which is about 92% saturated fat and didn't know saturated fat was in fact cholesterol. There is a difference between what "effects" something and what "is" something

No, your right, you actually said cholesterol was caused by saturated fat. It's hard to avoid saturated fat considering it's in every food that has fat in it, I guess mother nature's funny that way.
