Eat more 'superfoods' to lose weight

Interesting article on CNN's website. I really like this quote from the story: "The idea of focusing on what you should eat, instead of what you can't, could change the way we look at weight loss in America," Lucy Danziger

What would a diet article be without a slideshow?

Disagree. People in America are fat for one main reason.................over consumption. If you look at most people who maintain their weight throughout life one of the main things they have in common are, exercise, consuming daily essentials and staying within calorie limits all while still eating what they want.
Omission of foods people like to eat to lose weight eventually ends up in failure. That's why people on average who diet have done it several times in their life already. They keep using that same approach.

I totally agree. The only thing I would add is that tastes can change. Over time, I have eliminated some foods from my diet, which I no longer even like anymore. Example: I was a diet Coke fiend, to the tune of a couple of liters a day. Now I drink plain or sparkling water instead, and actually prefer it to diet Coke. So, if you can train your palate to prefer some nutritional powerhouses, and not miss the stuff you are replacing, that's the thing!

Yes! I definitely think you can "retrain" yourself. For instance, I never really enjoyed beans growing up - but now I eat all types of beans at least once per day and I prefer them to many other things.

I've also given up pop and find it to be un-enjoyable.

That said, I've also read the book Eat to Live which *does* focus on what you should be eating and I'm having a great deal of success with it. I see all the things I can eat and I don't feel deprived or anything.

"But to say that they boost fat loss may be taking it a step too far.Danziger agrees: Superfoods aren't a free pass to eat as much as you want, whenever you want." -The best line in the article.

" You will lose weight without trying, experts say of eating more superfoods" -The most stupid line in the article.

Agree! As with VergingOnVegan and Darkling_glor I have retrained my palate to enjoy healthy foods. Although unlike them I seem to be a true sugar addict. Although I have really cleaned up my diet (CNN slideshow looks very familiar) I do feel the sugar pull and would LOVE to down the 3 pound bag of Peanut M&Ms if my conscience would let me! It won't let me get past a couple of handfuls during weak moments. I got rid of sugar and white flour from my daily diet 5 years ago. Since October I have stepped up the health factor by decreasing animal products to mere ounces per week. I have removed salt from my cooking, and 95% of all added oils. Grains and starchy veggies are taking a back seat to my green veggies and whole fruits. My biggest purchases at Costco are from the produce sections. I usually only eat animal products now because my husband cooks them. I'd never cook it for myself but do have a bite now and then, but I don't really miss it or crave it.

I have adopted the ETL "diet" as my healthy lifestyle choice. You might think it is overwhelming and undoable, but I find it makes perfect sense for me. When someone says margaritas, I think of the corn syrup and other crap that goes into most mixes and the alcohol that just doesn't work for me anymore. I used to love diet sodas, too, but I'm much more conscious of the chemical ingredients that go into food these days, and that alone makes many things unappealing to me.

If you just want to lose weight so you can start eating candy again for halloween, great! But that type of mentality doesn't work for me and never did. Nor does dosing myself with a handful of M&Ms per day. That keeps my cravings always going. Just like I imagine a little bit of heroin does for the druggie.

It might just help someone else to say that yes, this IS an option and there ARE people out there who embrace it and it works for them. Your tastes WILL change if you allow them the time to do so. I just know my healthy food choices will give me a much healthier life in the end, and do the best to keep me as disease free as possible. So many nutrients in the green plants that you just can't get in a V8!

My experience in eating The Eat To Live Diet WHILE counting my calories - and calories only not fat, protein, or carbs- helped me to blast off the first 7 of my last 10 pounds. You know the last 10 that are impossible to lose? Lost those easier than the first 10 pounds when I weighed 205! Go figure!
