No running store around. Now what?

So everyone says to go get fitted to get a good running shoe. The problem is there doesn't seem to be a store anywhere near me that does that. I googled running stores in Wisconsin and only one is near me, but it looks like they really only sell those toe shoes, and running gear that is not shoes. So I doubt they do all of the things everyone talks about getting done to find a good pair of running shoes. The only other place I found was Good Feet, but that is just inserts I think.

So are there any websites that I can go to that can help me find the right kind of running shoe? Or is this something I will have to travel far to get?

www.runnersworld.com has a great shoe finder in it. If you order them online from Zappos.com (lots of others do this, too, but I've had really good luck with Zappos) you can return them if you don't like them. You can also get the list of likely shoes and take it to a department store and try them on. I use runnersworld.com a lot for info.

+1 on using runnersworld.com - they also have tips on trying to determine what type of shoe you need (cushioning, stability, motion control)

The most important aspect of your shoes, however, is that they fit really well. Typically you'll wear anywhere between .5 and 1 size bigger than your street shoes (but even that varies by manufacturer - in Asics I wear the same size for runners as my street shoe)
