Couldn't you build some raised beds to grow in?

That is what we have to do because our soil is pretty much all clay around here. Got to love the Smoky Mountains!

    Right now I have planted:
    Strawberries
    Raspberries
    Potatoes
    Onions
Radishes (already had to thin them!)
    Beets
    Carrots

When we get closer to the "no risk of frost" time (late April/early May) I will add:
    Slicing Tomatoes
    Roma Tomatoes
    Cherry Tomatoes
    Bell Peppers
    Banana Peppers
    Jalapeno Peppers
    Cucumbers
    Squash
    Bush Beans
    Eggplant

Then I have my herbs in containers on the deck:
    Rosemary
    Basil (x2)
    Oregano
    Sage
    Thyme
    Dill
    Parsley
    Cilantro
And then a couple to be decided. I always do something "new" to fill it out.

Tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, bell peppers. Usually we try other fun stuff too like corn, carrots, lettuce, and sometimes hot peppers (jalapenos were a success but the habaneros were ridiculous!) And once in a blue moon we get a random pumpkin plant that pops up from the ones we let decompose on the dirt after Halloween.

My dream is to plant a garden but I live in an apartment with roommates so I don't really have much room :(
However, if I did have one, I'd plant strawberries and tomatoes.
