Could weakness in the foot lead to other things?

I had a gout attack at the end of August and while the pain went away, that area was swollen for a while, and then itchy .... I'm thinking it must be Athlete's Foot and bought cream for that. Cost $20 but less than a podiatrist's visit. (Not that I'm ruling out a dr's visit, mind you ...)
