How many steps a day should I be aiming for? Some people say shoot for 6000 steps, others say more? Is there a general guideline to follow?

I recently bought a fitbit and it suggests trying to reach 10,000 steps per day. I have a desk job, so I try to walk on my breaks and take the long way back to my desk when I'm up and about but I still have a lot of walking to do to reach 10,000 steps in a day. (I get an average of 5,000 steps so far just with walking on breaks and such) If you have a pedometer or another way to count your steps, wear it for a day and mark a starting point. Then give yourself a goal to increase by X number or steps each day or week (whichever works best for you). Reaching each goal you set will help keep you motiviated to keep moving. Good luck!0
