Help... I work at an ice cream shop.... :\

Okay, so my summer job is working at a local ice cream/custard shop. It's great and all, except we get FREE ICE CREAM during our shift! As much as we want! I have worked there for four summers now, and every summer I end up giving in to temptation and eating... well... a few bowls and then some every time I work!! This week was my third week working for the summer and at first I was doing really well, but I'm losing motivation quickly Tonight I think I literally ate every single flavor.
I try to bring my own snacks and keep busy working to keep my mind off of the ice cream, but it's so hard when the store isn't busy and I just have to sit there and STARE at the delicious ice cream! Does anyone have any good advice? Or just a kick in the butt? It would be much appreciated

One word might help you ---"P L A N".
If you want to eat ice cream everyday, that is a choice you make, but you will have to plan how you are going to eat for the rest of the day and factor in some extra cardio to help burn it off.
You might find it easier to allow yourself some ice cream on alternate days. Maybe if you approach eating ice cream by thinking of how much it will "cost" you-- in terms of what else you can eat and the time you will spend exercising over and above what you are already doing, it will be easier to resist the temptation:devil: to eat it all the time.
Also, once you know you can have it any time you "choose" it is no longer the "forbidden fruit" that you have to obsess over and feel deprived if you don't get it all the time. Also think of how good you will look in the new clothes you can justify buying when you are at your goal weight.:drinker:
I hope this approach will help you!! Good luck!!!0 -
Thats a tough one. I dont think I could work there either.. LOL
I agree with weaklink. Burn it and earn it! but remember, Ice cream is still ice cream..LOL.. not the same as eating a healthier snack. Maybe try limiting to the low cal varieties is a good idea, that is.. if they sell that.
You could also try using those super minty breath strips or brushing your teeth when you get that "gotta have it" craving. Nothing tastes good right after doing that.0 -

Boy, do I EVER agree with this reply!
When I was a kid, and they asked what our dream job was, MINE was working as an ice-cream tester!
Dream job ya, but, NOT good for weight control, that's for sure!
These days I curb my LOVE of ice-cream "some" by eating Edy's slow churned, no sugar added ice-cream. It's "almost" as good as the real thing. I also exercise alot for it too. So, I guess that's my suggestion to you. Get LOTS AND LOTS of exercise, and maybe, try REAL HARD to just eat the lowest calorie stuff.
Good luck, you're sure gonna need it with YOUR job! :laugh:0 -
I used to work at the front desk of the Doubletree hotel and if you've ever stayed at one then you know that whenever you check in, they give you a giant fresh from the oven chocolate chip cookie. :noway: Well I had just started my weight loss journey, and I was always giving out these delicious cookies that everyone went nuts over!!!
Anyway, the only way for me to stay strong was to just NOT EAT A COOKIE!!!!!!! I never had one the whole time I was there, because I knew if I had one, I'd end up eating a few every day!:blushing:
My advice is just stay strong!!! Think about how being thin feels waaaaay better than ice cream, (or anything else for that matter,) tastes!
Good luck!!!
I'm rooting for you!!!!!!:flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou:0 -

If Ice Cream didn't make you fat . . .
I would have suggested to think about all the bad stuff that's in it, but since you work there, you may, y'know, tell a customer everything that is actually in the ice cream and get fired. Just keep it to yourself.
Or don't listen to my advice. That works too.:laugh:0 -
someone mention ice cream ? :ohwell: I was trying to remember the last time I had any......
Some good advice here! still couldn't work there...:grumble:0 -
I know how you feel, I work at a gourmet pizza restaurant!
It's hard! Co-workers are always buying and sharing pizza, salad (not a healthy one either) and desserts, and they always ask if I'd like any. I just convinced myself I don't want any. At first it was hard, but after a while it just got to be my automatic reply. And it helps when others get it that you don't want to eat so they can't help throw you off track. There was a new girl eating a dessert and when she asked if I wanted any, another girl replied "She doesn't eat here!" And yet another girl asked me to share a pizza and when I said no she said "Man, you are so dedicated!" But I just know that one slice isn't going to be one slice. It triggers my wanting to eat the whole thing. But I won't eat it there because I don't want to eat a whole pizza in front of everyone...I'd stop at the store and buy a pizza to eat at home by myself! Sad but true.
It took a while, but it just gets to be automatic. Tell yourself "I don't eat that", and it will really sink in. When people question you or try to get you to eat some, tell them no, be polite but make it clear that they need to lay off.0 -

This was a very honest and helpful post you just made. Especially THIS:It triggers my wanting to eat the whole thing. But I won't eat it there because I don't want to eat a whole pizza in front of everyone...I'd stop at the store and buy a pizza to eat at home by myself! Sad but true.
We have all ben there. It's just hard for most of us to admit to it! :flowerforyou:0 -
Well you are in the middle of temptation every time you work. I suggest eating before work and getting exercise in and make sure you plan on having your little bit each day. When you tellyourself you can't have it is when you are most likely to go ape *kitten* about it. Pick the smallest size and limit yourself to just one and make it a point to allow yourself that one treat toward teh END of your shift. Then you have something to look forward too. :drinker:0

Wow, thanks for your replies everyone! Some seriously awesome ideas. I think I'm going to plan that at my last shift every week, I can have a dish of whatever flavor I want. And of course fit in a good workout that day I think the best motivation will be thinking back to what you guys have said! So thanks!!!! :flowerforyou:0
