walking poles

I've injured both knees and walking has been my main exercise for the last 4 weeks.Has anyone used walking poles?How did you like them and do they really burn 40% more calories?

    Love 'em and it's probably more like 30% - yes!

    eta: I stand corrected. Wikipedia says up to 46% more. Google Nordic Walking. My mom's been doing it for years. I'm just starting. It's amazing.

    i saw some one using them the other day, is there a techinque involved, that's a lot of calories!

    Sort of and not as much as you'd think. There is a certain way to hold the poles so you don't get injured. They aren't heavy. It's just the length of them that requires the specific motion I guess. It works everything from your back to your stomach. I kid you not. If you haven't already gotten your poles get the ones without wrist loops. They will break (your wrists that is).

    Thanks for all your input.I have heard they were great.I was at costco today and almost bought some.They had different tips for sidewalk walking vs trail.Guess I'll have to go get them!
