Interval walking.

So I read an article saying that if you alternate your speed while walking you burn 3X more than walking at a steady pace. So this is their plan....
Minutes 1-5 walk at an intensity level of 5 out of 10.
Minutes 6-7 walk at an intensity level of 6.
Minutes 8-10 intensity level 5.
minutes 11-12 intensity level 7.
minutes 13-15 intensity level 5.
minutes 16-17 intensity level 8.
minutes 18-20 intensity level 5.

Thoughts on this? Have any of you tried this and seen results?

I think the reason it works it because it keeps your heart rate in the "fat burning" zone. If you pump it up and stay there, you're getting a good cardio workout for sure, but not necessarily burning fat...our bodies seem to respond the best to variety.

I do it often because it helps break up the monotony of the dread mill.

I am usually dripping with sweat and out of breath.

It also seems to make the time go faster.

3X sounds hghly inflated. I do like walking at different paces. Treadmills are great for this. Some walking DVDs have incorporated this too. Variety is good.

I love doing interval waking on the treadmill. It really allows me to push myself. I always feel a lot better after doing 30 minutes of cardio this way than doing 60 minutes of steady walking. I feel like I'm doing more for my overall health. Not to mention, I normally make it a farther distance wise and work up a much greater sweat.
