starting running..AGAIN!

I started running last year and had got to the point that I could run 8 to 10km comfortably, and the longest run I did was 17km. I then lost focus and stopped running at all (in fact no exercise at all). Ive started again last week but Im wondering how long it takes to get the fitness back? Its definatley easier this time, but Im still stuggling to get through 5km without walking. I know it takes hard work, but Im just wondering how long I should allow myself to get back to the 5km -then 8- then 10km etc - run without getting discouraged??
