Wobbly thighs

We've moved the elliptical trainer from the garage to the dining room - step 1
Step 2 - I'm wondering what it will do for my legs? I would like to tone wobbly thighs but not build muscles.
Any recommendations? Should I use it...or put it back in the garage?
Thanks

An eliptical is a great way to burn calories. While you can't spot reduce areas, you can lose fat by burning calories all over which will in the end result in losing your wobbly thighs. It's not likely that you will make your thighs ultra muscular just by using the eliptical.0

I suggest squats, lunges and other toning exercises. You won't be able to avoid building muscle... muscle is what supports your legs and will keep your legs tighter. Cardio will only take you so far... and will produce that skinny-fat effect without muscle toning.
I recommend doing yoga, often. You get the best of both worlds from cardio and strengthening... and it's a fantastic way to tone your legs.0 -

Agreed! If ellipticals made thighs musclar, we'd all be happy though!!!0 -
An elipical will do wonders for your legs. You will tone them up and you will lose weight all over your body due to the cardio it gives you. Your thighs will not bulk up unless you decide to add weights and add lunges and squats to your routine and even then, women tend to tone more than bulk, it's in our nature.0

^^^ Totally agree!0 -
Why NOT build muscle?!?!? The more muscle you have, the higher your BMR, which translates into more calories you can consume w/o gaining weight! Women are so afraid of building muscle. There is no such thing as toning. What happens is you build muscle and the fat decreases, thereby making that area appear more firm a/k/a toned.
I have just started my journey to body building. Let me tell you, it is VERY difficult for a woman to bulk up. I lift heavy weights multiple times per week and keep my diet high in protein to try to build muscle and I still just look "toned", not muscular like a man.
Don't be afraid of muscles!0 -
Building lean muscle will not "bulk up" your thighs if that is what you are worried about. It will more than likely take an all inclusive approach. The elliptical is a great burn and a great cardio workout; but also consider biking or spin classes if you have access to that as well as working out with weights; leg presses, leg extensions and leg curls should be a great start.0

Brazil Butt Lift from Beachbody! It is an AMAZING butt and leg workout! I carry my weight in my thighs and this is toning them up very nicely!0

...you can't get rid of the "wobbly legs" unless you build muscle..0

as a female you can build muscle and not look like a body builder...
I am in strength training classes at my gym... i have been gaining good amounts of muscles in my arms, shoulders and legs... the ladies have just been slimming down just by doing the same exercises with smaller weights.0 -

I'm not sure of your activity level... but I was pretty sedentary. Now I know I'm only on day 4 but the Jillian Michaels 30 day shred works your thighs like CRAZY. The entire upper half of my legs HURT. But they get worked SO much during her workout I KNOW they will be solid rocks by time I complete the video. Just a suggestion! I have wobbly/jiggly thighs too and I'm noticing how tired and how much they hurt after my workouts. LOVE it!! Good luck!!0

Umm...If you don't build muscle, your thighs will not look "toned." It's called MUSCLE tone for a reason.0 -

Yeah 'tone' is really just the visual look of a high muscle to fat ratio for a given area. More muscle + less fat means the muscles show up more because the fat isn't hiding them.
You should definitely want to build muscle because it's the key to keeping your basal metabolic rate up as you age.
Without the use of steroids, it's pretty much impossible for most women to look bulky. Even when lifting weights. We just don't have enough testosterone in our bodies.0 -
Thanks for all the useful advice and sharing your experiences. Really appreciate it.
I should have been clearer about building muscle - I just dont want rugby player thighs.
I've started using the elliptical for HIIT too which I think I am feeling benefit from.
Watched a fascinating BBC4 programme on it.
I just feel I need to switch things around to keep motivation up and get the last extra few extra pounds shifted.
Thanks again for all your comments.0 -
Just posting a quick update to say thanks - you were all right!
I've been doing 30 mins elliptical most days for the past few weeks.
It has already made a big difference to my thighs and given me an all over boost.
I'm one week in to JM's 6 pack programme too.
It's great to feel better and look better in a short space of time.
I've no patience!
Cheers all.0 -
You tone wobbly places by building muscle there to burn fat. You don't make fat hard, you make muscle.0
