I need some schooling.
I'm 42, professional.
I've been living under a rock for 10 years.
I need clothes.
I don't want to look like I'm trying to be 22. .
I don't want to look like an idiot (this one will be tough).
I've given up the sandals for flip-flops (step one)
I have a ton of Levis, but they are mostly loose-fit 550 (OUT?).
I live in sunny Florida, near Cocoa Beach.
Ok. . I'm ready!

No loose fitting jeans ever looked good on any body's butt! Donate em! Go to American Eagle. You don't look 42 so why not dress a lil younger...chicks dig that! lol!0

I have a thing for well dressed men! I suggest slacks and khakis as good "I'm not trying too hard, but damn I'm sexy" options. Button down shirts and polos are probably the best options on shirts. My boyfriend mostly shops on zappos.com, so I don't know what physical stores you would go to too find the best stuff, maybe Macy's?0 -
Find someone with a confident, well fit look that you like. Ask where they shop.
DH wears jeans, khaki's, button down shirts, polos. I send him to good local menswear store with a list of what he needs: "navy blazer, khaki pants, and shoes for business casual". He gives the list to the salesman, they send him home with the right stuff.0 -
My husband who is 43 wears dress jeans, nice button down shirts (the kind that are "bedazzled" for lack of a better term and are very tasteful) and a sports jacket. Sometimes he'll wear dress shoes or his loafers which are dressy/casual.
Just go to a nice mens store, tell them what you're looking for and they'll help you out. That's what my husband does.0 -
I've dabbled as a professional shopper for Washington DC's elite [mostly during the holiday season]. Feel free to PM me what you wish to present and [roughly] what you believe your budget to be. I'll come up with a single outfit that fits what you are looking for.
If you are pleased with the suggestion and would like to get more advice, we can discuss compensation for future sartorial advice.
Cheers.

Trade in the 550's for 514's, the slim-straight. Not hipster-style skinny jeans, but closer fitting than the loose jeans. Good middle ground.0

What type of wardrobe are you looking for? I gotta say, Banana Republic makes some understated and stylish men's clothes. Their classic blazers, suits, ties, and shirts are flattering and unadorned with bells and whistles. If I had to dress the guy of my dreams, he'd own a classic BR suit.0

Polo shirts, dark-wash jeans in a straight or boot cut style, button-downs (go for either solids or stripes, plaid is iffy). The most important thing is that your clothes fit you well. If you intend to buy a lot of clothes at once, get a sales assistant or a friend to help you pick items in colours that "go". They don't have to match, they just have to work well on the same palette. Then, when you mix and match at home, you'll always look put together.0

If you have a Buckle store near you I recommend going there and have them find you jeans. My husband got his first pair that actually FIT from there. They know their jeans.0

I sent my boyfriend to Nordstrom one day because he was whining about how he has no clothes and doesn't know what to pick out (if it were up to him, he'd wear athletic apparel 100% of the time). I told him to go to the men's section and tell them to dress him, then he could pick and choose what he liked based on what they put on him. Worked out really well actually! Some of the things the guys at Nordstrom picked out were NOT his cup of tea, but he was able to go from there and figure out what did work for him and what didn't while getting some guidance.0

Totally agree, Banana Republic is awesome. Sophisticated, understated, and very classic...LOVE that look!0 -
