Is getting healthy making us SHALLOW?
Options
I've been on the forums all day... unusually slow day in the office, and I've seen a lot more negative comments about overweight people than I would have expected from a website that is all about health and fitness. Especially considering that probably 90% of us on here are here to try to loose weigh. Sure some people may only have 10lbs that they would like to loose, some 100, some more than that.... but still most of us are here because we are not happy about how bodies look.
Some of the comments while I know it was not directed at me personally I got a little offended at. Sure everyone is entitled to their opinion on physical preference etc. But just because people are overweight does not necessarily mean that they are lazy... I am overweight, I work 3 jobs, and I still try to make it to they gym for an hour before work every morning.
I was surprised that it seemed like more people on MFP had negative viewpoints on overweight people than even out 'in real life'... But maybe it really shouldn't surprise me all that much considering how aware we are trying to make ourselves of our health, since we are among the few people who record and measure everything they eat, pay attention to calories burned... Is it just making people that much more aware? For example: There was a thread about if guys are ok with it if girls eat more than they do... Most of the guys I actually know don't pay any attention to, or care what a girl eats as a general rule... I never paid attention to what other people (or myself
) ate until I started trying to get healthy, now I don't comment, but I do notice what other people order and eat too.
Is it just that I come from a Mid-western town where we are all corn-fed and no one can afford plastic surgery that it seems like I've got more negativity about overweight people? Or are people just so aware about what is going on with themselves on here that they are a lot more aware of what is going on with other people than they used to be?
- Not that its ever ok to be rude to people, regardless of whether they are overweight/skinny, tall/short, black/white etc.

Shallow would at least imply some depth, of which I have none. Sorry.0

I'm also resisting the urge to re-post the original comment, edited for grammar and syntax. That just wouldn't be nice.0 -

It's very sad anyone would "run into" a rude person as well as rude comments regarding being overweight on this site. Although you'll always find a small amount of people attempting to make someone's day as bad as their life.
Don't worry about the "haters" concentrate on the people here who want to motivate, support, and encourage you.0
