What I mean by fall-back foods or ingredients are things that you can nosh on or drink when you're feeling like snacking but that have few calories or fewer calories than foods you used to choose. Please - give me yours so I can get some new ideas.
Some new dieting favorites of mine:
Stevia in place of sugar - zero calories and tasty. I can't tolerate aspartame and try to use Splenda sparingly, but stevia is great as a sweetener to cut down on the amount of calories in a sweet dish or to flavor tea, smoothies, whatever. You can buy it in packets in the grocery store, if you're not familiar with it.
Celestial Seasonings Cinnamon Apple Spice Tea - nice naturally sweet flavor with no calories. Perfectly sweet with a packet of stevia.
Almond milk - If you get the unsweetened kind it's only 40 calories per cup! The sweetened kind is only 60 calories per cup. A good substitute for milk.
