4000+ Extra Calories

We're heading out on a weekend bike tour, riding 85 miles, then 45 for each of the next two days. I looked up the calorie burn for tomorrow's 8+ hours of biking and it's going to be well over 4000! Any suggestions on what to pack? I don't want to stop for fast food or get to our destination starving and end up eating an entire pizza.

Thanks!

A bunch of snacks.... Protein bars, nuts, dried fruit, gogurt... You are better off snacking the entire time!

Eat some extra tonight for energy, several snacks throughout the rides and extra on the recovery day.

Typically when you are planning an endurance event, you would want to eat extra for a few days before so you can store energy. I rode a century in September -- 100 miles and 3500 foot climb in 5 hrs 45 min, and burned over 4000 calories. It was on a Saturday and I started ramping up calories on Wednesday, ate as needed during the ride, decent dinner, then ate the remaining calories on Sunday (rest day).

Be aware when you have an endurance event you will likely retain water and the scale will go up for a week or so afterward, but it will come back down and then some if you eat properly.

Hmm.. I hadn't thought to start early. Great suggestions! Pedialyte is a great suggestion. Glad I checked with you guys. I have lists of everything we need to bring but spaced on the electrolyte replacements and energy storage. Thanks!

My husband does mountain biking, hours and hours, (insert jealous snarl), I make him a batch of these.... http://smashedpeasandcarrots.blogspot.com/2011/08/no-bake-energy-bites-recipe.html
I just add a cup of protein powder and some chopped almonds.

The way I make them they come out to 155 cals and 8 protein each, and they are really tasty and easy to pack. We both prefer them to cliff bars or the like.

Thanks for all the suggestions! We had an awesome ride and ate fairly well (lots of pizza off the bike, though). I can't wait to try the homemade energy bars- yum!

When I have big rides, I always take Cliff Shots Gel (same manufacturer as Cliff Bars), mainly because the packaging is easy to manage while I'm still riding. My biking buddies are usually hesitant to stop and rest, so with the Gel I can manage to get a bunch of calories in my system quickly, and without stopping.

    Enjoy the ride!
