Nice score! I've been trying to get all my veggies from our farmer's market. How much is your honey? At our market they are selling 8oz jars for $12.00...that is more than my weekly veggie budget. I love getting local honey, but not that much! I'll go honey less.

I got the 12 oz jar of honey for $3. I would not have bought it had it not been so inexpensive. Honey is really pricey at most of the other markets here. This is apparently a jar from a guy who keeps honeybees on his farm about 30 miles south of here.

That's a great price. The honey at our market is from a farm not too far...probably also about 50 miles. I have noticed that it is high in the stores lately...as is everything. But the local honey shouldn't be more expensive.

I wonder if the cost of producing or transporting is going up. Usually you see increases in prices for imported foods when the price of gas goes up, but maybe it's something more than that. The honey at my grocery store is absurdly expensive. It's $15 for 8 oz jars, and the honey doesn't have a lot of flavor either.

I guess I shouldn't mention that we have a coconut palm, mamey tree, and avocado tree in our back yard huh?

ahh SOOOO JEALOUS!! I was just thinking the other day that my life would be complete with an avocado tree. That way I will never be expected to pay $2.99 for one freaking avocado!! I haven't been able to buy any recently because they are so pricey here (in MA)

I was shocked how easy they are to grow down here. I never could afford them when I lived in TN either.

What sucks about the tropics is lack of berries. You don't get many berries here (raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, blueberries, etc.). They don't grow as well down here, I understan. I miss them.

I love going to Farmer's Markets here (in Melbourne Australia) but they are so expensive. I only really want to buy the fruit and veg but there's heaps of gourmet stalls there too. The produce does look great but because they have become trendy the price is high...

On a positive note - my MIL just told me yesterday she can get me fresh honey from her friend who keeps bees in her backyard (and it's like 10km from the CBD)! Yay. I think it's about AU$15 (~US$15) for about a 750 ml jar (~25 oz).

Ask around and see if there are any other markets that you can go to. The one I went to today was pretty beat up lookin' but great. No gourmet stands. There's one near my house that has a gourmet section, and it's super expenive too sadly :(

I live fairly close to the CBD so that would push prices up. I have stopped at roadside stalls in the country and picked up some great bargains before however I don't really drive out of the city often though...

Maybe a carpool thing could work with a few of your friends. You can all go veggie shopping out of town one afternoon together and share the fuel costs? Road trips with friends are always fun either way!

My best friend is coming with me next week to the market.

Sounds good looks great. I used to buy papaya, mangoes and guava at farmer market when I live in islands, now I buy other fresh fruits locally here in California...in season.

Well I guess I will just have to satisfy myself with the strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries I have growing in my garden right now =] Hopefully they continue to grow well all summer long!

    That sounds wonderful!

I did put out a blueberry bush the other day. We shall see how that goes.

I planted a blackberry bush 3 years ago... not a damn berry has emerged. Have had to get wild blackberries growing around the neighborhood...
