afraid of weights- please help!

Hi MFP,
I've seen a lot of success stories about women and lifting weights. Can anyone suggest where to start? Do you use free weights, weight machines, or a combination?? Normally I wouldn't be so scared because usually I work out in an all female gym. However, I'm currently living in South Korea and working out at a co-ed gym. Not only is there a huge language barrier (I can literally speak 5 Korean words) , but I feel as though I'm already some type of spectacle because I look different than 99% of the population... any suggestions would be appreciated :)
