How to train for a 5k?

I've never been a runner. Seriously...I got my mother to get me an excuse so I didn't have to run in my 5th grade track and field. (probably the reason I have struggled with weight my whole life...up and down)

But...recently it's perked my interest. I want to get into shape, lose weight, and be able to run. I want to do my first 5k the middle of August.

How should I train? I know C25k is popular but I've read that people usually maintain their weight on it without losing...I want to become a runner but also lose weight. I am doing Zumba 3x a week to help with weight loss.

Is there any information or advice anyone can give a very very very new to running person? Is it a logical goal to beagle to run a 5k by The middle of August without ever running before? And how can I keep losing weight while training?

c25k is an awesome program! it definitely gets a non runner into a runner. i really suggest doing that, because any other program that you find to train for a 5k, will be almost exactly the same. you might lose a few pounds, or you might just maintain...but really, eating less and eating healthier is what will help most, along with exercise. there will be no magic weightloss running program, unfortunately. :/
