Question on Protein Shakes

I am trying to get back on the wagon and start working out and losing weight. I had lost 32 pounds in 3 months and hurt my back and turned around and put it back on!
I do shift work and on a 10 week rotation I have 4 weeks of 5am to 12pm shifts. 2 weeks on that shift, then a 11am to 6 shift (here I do my workout in the morning and then have my shake) and then another 5am to 12pm shift. Then the rest of the shifts for the 10 week rotation are afternoon shifts so I do my workout in the morning and have my shake then.
Anyways pretty much everything I read says to drink your protein shakes after a workout. I like to have mine for breakfast. On the 5am shift I like to have mine for breakfast but I don't get to work out til the afternoon. Is this really that bad that I don't have mine after I workout? I don't do the shake in the afternoons, I only do 1 for breakfast. I don't want to do 2 shakes because I add fruits and I try real hard to limit my carbs and starches.
