Hi, a beginner lifter here, wanting to build muscle. What protein rich foods do you guys like or recommend? I have an Optimum Nutrition shake every day, what else is there from "real" food?

Try Greek Yoghurt as well. I have this with chocolate protein powder. It's quite filling as well. Nets me around 31g of protein.0

My favourite sources:
- Chicken: If you take the skin off, the protein on all chicken (white or dark) is awesome. It tastes even better with skin on but it might not fit your fat intake.
- Steak: Specifically flank, top sirloin, and skirt - Even with the fat left on, these things have large amounts of protein.
- White fish + shellfish: White fish and shellfish are almost pure protein. Tuna is neither of those thing but raw tuna is quite lean as well.
- Canned meats: I think canned meats taste like garbage but I choke them down since they're an accessible source of protein.
- Dairy products: Cheese, cottage cheese, greek yogurt, regular yogurt, milk, kefir, etc. These are great because it is a blend of casein and whey.
- Beef Jerky
- Fattier fish: Salmon and sardines are pretty legit.
- Eggs and egg whites: Only problem with egg yolks is that they come with some fat, which can be problematic for some people's macronutrients but there's a lot of protein in egg yolks.
- Tofu: Tofu is pretty awesome.
- Protein powders: My favourite source since it allows for a more diverse diet.
- Ground meats
- Pork: Pork tenderloin is just as leas as chicken breast but almost as dense in protein. Add ham, peameal bacon, etc. and pork is a pretty awesome source of protein.
Other stuff that is so and so:
- Beans: They come with a lot of carbs but they do have quite a bit of protein
- Pumpkin: High fibre, decent protein levels
- Nuts: I think nuts are an awful source of protein but they have some trace amounts. They're just too dense in calories for the amount of protein you getDont forget eggs.....more white than the yolk
Almost half of an entire egg's protein content comes from the yolk.peanut putter
6g of fat, 3g of carbs, and 3g of protein? I don't think it's a good source or any nuts for that matter. Calories are far too dense for the amount of protein.0 -
Oatmeal is a good choice. A packet and a half has a protein content of 5 grams, so eat up!!! :happy:0

Thanks for all your suggestions. I'm going on a grocery shop tomorrow so a lot of these will be on my list.
(Apart from cottage cheese, sorry Juwaack68!)0
