Laying off the rum and coke...

Hi all! I have been on MFP for about a week and since I started, I haven't more than a cocktail each night. I am married, and my husband likes to have a few cocktails when he comes home from work and I would usually join him. Well, last night, I decided to have a few drinks and I can't believe how bad I felt! I woke up in the middle of the night thirsty and with a horrible headache.
Have any of you dealt with giving up drinking? Is it difficult when you have a spouse who likes to drink? I'd love to hear from some other people who have gone through this issue. Thanks!

I'm laying off the pop but keep the drinks, keeping my wine drinking in moderation or slicing it with some juice or watering it down with ice a bit. Keeps me on track calorie wise but lets enjoy with all of my friends0

I have had the same problem, my husband likes to have a few lite beers after work and I to indulge with him, but I've cut way back and stay within my calorie range.0

Stick to hard liquour, but mix with DIET sodas and in a TALL glass to make the drink last longer. Do not eat an hour before or after drinking, and do not eat while you drink.0

I drink 1 to 2 glasses of wine on the weekends and the OCCASIONAL liquor with a diet soda. I have had to cut back on going out with friends, but not too much. All things in moderation.0

If I drink more than two beers or more than four ounces of hard alcohol, I get the same symptoms. It's a toxin, and it dehydrates.
But if I drink one 16 ounce glass of water per drink, it seems to stop my dehydrating headaches. I still stick with the "No more than two" limit, though.0 -
Personally, i find it difficult to hang out with friends/fam who are drinking without joining them..... so, i've basically cut back on the social life. It kind of sucks sometimes, but they don't understand the words "trying to lose weight" and once i have a few beers in me, i don't understand those words either. Some folks can do the moderation thing, i can't. So, i've just cut out the everyday drinking and indulge once every couple weeks. And yes, it was hard at first, but staying busy helps.0

I like to drink rum with diet soda. No calories from the soda and only like 60 calories in a serving of rum.0

I have given up beer *drools* and switched to rum and diet coke. 58 calories per drink.0
