New and Nervous

So weight has always been an issue for me but more so after my mother's death about 5 years ago......I'm a single mom myself and I think between the stress of my mom's illness and death and grieving her loss, I ended up feeling that the only time that I could take time for myself was by eating. So I did.
More recently, I've been trying to make some changes to my exercise and diet, hoping these would kick-start me in the opposite direction. I started walking a lot more and gave up fast food and chips. Went to the doctor today and found out I'd gained 9 pounds. I was shocked and frustrated.
A friend recommended this site as a way to keep track of food and exercise. Here's hoping it helps because the status quo isn't doing so well for me.
