If you have a few months this should be loads... If you've been out jogging a few times already you could do C25K but maybe start at wk 2 or 3. This is a 9 wk program and you could go straight onto bridge to 10k, which is a 6wk programme (I think).... start now and you should be ready for your race for life no problem... Good luck0

i used a free podcast called podrunner which has a training program for 10k based on interval training. It aims to get you running a 10k in approx 1 hour using tempo intervals. You just download it to your mp3 player and go! It's a 10 week program
I highly recommend it.

It so depends on your current level of fitness. Some people could go out and run a 10K with no training at all, and some people need to spend a few months developing endurance to run a 10K.
Back when I started running about 4 years ago, I ran a 7 mile run at the end of my first week of a 5-week training program for a half marathon. But I was also playing tennis regularly at the time so I was already physically fit. Now my performance wasn't anywhere near my potential, but I was able to run 10K distance from day 1.0
