Confused, so to those that eat at or above their BMR...

I'm pretty new to this, and I'm intrigued by all of the "Eat More to Lose" posts, but my question is: are the calories you are eating NET or GROSS? Obviously if I net 1400, but I'm also working out, I'd be eating a lot more, so I just want to make sure I'm doing it all correct!

Thanks in advance for any help!

  • Whatever your calorie goal is, that should be your NET goal. Net = at the end of the day, while hopping into bed, with all exercise taken into account, what is left.

I never knew anything about BMR or TDEE during the bulk of the time I was losing weight, but...

According to MFP, my BMR is around 1260, and by other calculations, closer to 1400. I did best netting between 1350-1500. I lost more pounds closer to 1350, but felt better (stronger, more energy) and had more body changes around 1500.

As you exercise, the site adds calories to your daily allowance. The site recommends you eat those calories to keep your metabolic rate at an optimal level (understanding that the calculations involving your metabolic rate are, at best, estimates based on averages).

Your ideal condition the way the site's eating plan works is to enter all of your food and exercise as honestly as you can, and end up as close as possible to having "0 calories remaining" on your home page and food diary page.

I bag a lunch and eat breakfast at home, so I pre-enter those for the day before I even leave the house. Then, during the day, I decide how much I want to eat for supper and "earn" the meal I want on the exercise equipment. If I can't "earn" as much as I'd like, I eat a smaller portion at supper or skip dessert.
  • I eat above my BMR, but do not go by MFP's. MFP's tells me mine is around 1250, but I went to google and took the average of about 10 other BMR calculators and it said mine was 1390. My goal is for 1450 for the day, net. Think about it.....If your BMR is 1350 and you eat 1350 but then workout and burn 500, then your body is left with 850 calories. 500 under your BMR, so I always eat at least most back.
