Tabata is a style of interval training that involves doing a certain exercise for 20 seconds at a high intensity, followed by resting for 10 seconds. You do 8 rounds of that (so 4 minutes of 20 seconds work, 10 seconds rest). It is not pleasant, but it works if you do it right.

It's a form of HIIT (high impact interval training).

I'm not sure if the program is the same in every class, but at my gym the format is:

    20 seconds exercise
    10 seconds rest
    repeat 7 more times
    move onto the next exercise

We do things like skaters, sprints, long jumps and other plyos, jump ropes, standing ab/oblique work, squat jumps, kickboxing, burpees etc. Right now my gym is on cardio-focus, but that changes every 6 weeks. Next round will be strength focused, then cardio/strength, then back to cardio.

I love tabata. I burn a ton of calories and it's fun and challenging. The great part is that within each exercise you can work at your own pace. You can keep a beat with the music or go faster or slower. I push myself much harder knowing I get a break every 20 seconds.

Its killing your for 20seconds, resting for 10seconds, repeated eight times. Any exercise you wish.

So sit ups, skipping, burpees, whatever you lioke. As many as fast as you can in 20seconds.

Its a high intensity interval training method.

It depends on what you want to achieve. Its not for Jersey Shore.
  • A four minute interval.

20 seconds of one exercise (i.e. burpees) ten seconds off repeat 8 times for a total of a 4 minute workout.

If done properly you have the potential to burn the same amount as a 30 minute jog.

We have tabata class at my gym where we do 5 of the 4 minute intervals with rest of 1 minute between each interval and it is an AMAZING workout if you put all you've got into it.

This is why i said i am not a big fan of intervals. That statement by the instructor is in correct. Honestly it's more likely you will burn muscle during interval training.

Hence the 'according to the instructor' thank God for disclaimers
