How quickly can you build muscle???

Hey guys. This is probably a strange question, but does anyone know how quickly you can add muscle weight? I just recently amped up my workout routine big time. I am doing a workout based on the same model as that "Insanity" DVD series and have been killing myself (in a good way) with it. After first starting it, I lost some weight pretty quickly (5 lbs in 1 week). However, since than, I seem to have hit a plateau and have been fluctuating around the same weight for 2 weeks now. The strange thing is that my pants are getting loser and I can see my abs a bit more. Is it possible that I am losing body fat and adding muscle at comparable rates or am I just wishing? (My legs do seem to have gotten REALLY big really quickly?!?)

  • there is 99.9% chance that that's what is happening!! That's one of the reasons the scale is so inaccurate at measuring your progress because you can lose inches but the scale will stay the same! I believe I somewhere something that said "for ever pound of fat you lose you gain half a pound of muscle while strength training" now I'm not quite sure if that is accurate or how it will be for your case but you are making progress! even if the scale doesn't show it!

If you are eating in a deficit, it is unlikely you are adding any new muscle tissue. To do that you need to be eating in a surplus and doing heavy strength training. That being said, you certainly can train and develop the muscle tissue you have, which if they were undeveloped for a period of time would show some development. If you are losing inches, you are losing fat. That is the only thing that matters as it doesn't sound like you are looking to bulk up or body build. Correct?

The link from Body Recomposition will be a good read. There is also other info there on building muscle.
