Anemia

So my doc just told me that I'm anemic...Just wondering what the best foods would be to help me get more iron...I actually do eat a lot of fresh spinach and I eat red meat about 2-3x a week. She put me on an iron supplement every other day but I didn't know if there was a better way to get it through foods.

Any suggestions would be so helpful!

leafy greens. You said you eat spinach. try eating it in unexpected places.... like in a smoothie, on a pizza, on sandwiches. I use spinach in soups and pasta dishes... yum

I think broccoli is high in iron too, no?

I've been anemic for many years. Tried the iron supplements and unfortunately they made me feel sick. I'd rather feel tired than sick AND tired! Not only that, but it wasn't that I wasn't getting enough iron... it is because my body doesn't absorb it efficiently. You might want to have your doctor check that as well. Eat or drink something citrus/acidic when you take your supplements (or with your iron rich meals for that matter)... that will help your body absorb the iron. But yes, leafy green veggies are great (including broccoli) and Multigrain Cheerios has 100% of the daily value of iron your body needs... have a bowl of that with a glass of OJ and you're set!

Organ meats are very high in iron, but not to many people can stomach Liver! The fresh citrus with your Iron supplement will help. you can also get desicated Liver capsules to boost the Iron, without having to eat the Liver, just swallow the capsules. I was Anemic as a child and it is a slow process to build your iron back up. Blood banks will not take your blood if you are anemic, but they will gladly give you professional help for free to build up your Iron numbers. Good luck, and be healthy!
