I have only recently joined MFP and have been reading the success stories like a crazy person, however yours was the first to really resonate with my experience. Rather than tell you why, I figure I’ll tell you a little about myself and maybe you’ll see it too.
I am 33 and I have been on a ‘diet’ of some kind or another for about 18 years of that. During high school I was extremely sporty and active which kept my naturally muscular frame reasonably lean. I only realise that in hindsight though, when I was 16 not being skinny seemed like the same thing as being fat… I really wish I’d worked out sooner that being muscular and curvy was awesome!!
Straight after high school my weight ballooned to around 90kg (200lb) and over the next 10 years fluctuated between 70kgs (150lb) and 110kg (230lb) several times depending on what crazy diet I was (or wasn’t) on…
Fast forward to age 29 (4 years ago) when I walked into a gym, met my trainer and my life changed. Slowly over the next 2 years things really changed for me. I went from eating like crap 95% of the time and have short crazy periods of ‘dieting’ to eating well most of the time. I also went from not being able to jog for 100m to being able to run 5km, deadlift well over my bodyweight and smash out 20 proper pushups in a row. I lost about 25kgs since I started and completely changed my bodyshape.
The past 2 years since then have been pretty amazing, I got engaged, married and changed careers. During that time I have continued to challenge myself in the gym and achieved amazing things with my body. BUT I have not lost any more fat…
So that brings me to right now and why I joined MFP. This year is the year to concentrate on diet, way way gone are the days when just training and eating reasonably was enough for the weight to come off. Currently I do 6-8 sessions a week which include CrossFit, power lifting and olympic lifting. I’ve just started to compete in both styles of weight-lifting. I have just begun experimenting with Intermittent Fasting and I am liking it so far.
I feel like I have the training thing all sewn up, but my diet is holding me back. I have many reasons for wanting to finally get to my goal:
# to improve my performance in the gym, particularly with BW stuff like chin-ups etc
# to be able to lift in a lower weight-division in comps
# to finally feel like I am HOT, not just hotter than I used to be
# so that people stop assuming I am lazy and unfit
# so I can wear whatever fashions I want
Sorry for the essay guys
