This might be a silly question. But I just joined a gym to start working on toning as I'm on this journey and I'm wondering how best to calculate calories burned while using weights/machines. Any tips or suggestions? If I'm going to try and be good and eat back my exercise calories, I need to know how much. I haven't been able to find any good tools though.

There really aren't, because it is just so variable.
How long were rest between sets, between lifts?
    How fast/slow was the lift?
How hard are you making it?

And since lifting is anaerobic, it is outside the range of HRM's to be accurate with calorie burn too.

That being said, take an avg of several sites, or what level you are at. These may end up using the same calorie burn database.

  • I just use the "Strength training/weight lifting" exercise under cardio and myfitnesspal calculates calories burned based on your stats. It's not accurate of course but it's better than nothing.
