A Pain In The Neck

OK, so not so much in the neck but the shoulders...

I get this extreme deep burning pain, that at one time affected only the right shoulder but now without discrimination also appears in my left. Difference is, the pain in the left is a deep deep pinch along with the burn, both equally unbearable. The pain is random but is happening more often and quite often when doing nothing at all.

Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Voltaren, ice, heat....nothing seems to help and it is certainly affecting my ability to workout and my quality of life.

My GP so far has no solution and I believe sometimes those who may have experienced it can offer much more help so I bring it to this forum with great appreciation for any ideas...suggestions. Thanks.

Instead of a GP, you really should consult a Sports Medicine Physician - they have the training necessary for sports/exercise related injuries.

MFP is not a certified medical-related site - please dont go looking for medical advice here...

Can you find a good chiropractor? (I LOVE my Chiro)
    Maybe a massage?
Have you tried alternating the tylenol and advil (1 dose every 3 hour or so) combined with alternating the heat and ice?

I have torn my trap. 2 different times and each time ended up on muscle relaxers and steroids for about 3 days to get the muscle spasms under control. My 15 yr. old was quite amused by one of the combos that my GP had me on, valium, vicodin, and prednisone...apparently I was pretty entertaining.

    Cramernh,

I agree a specialist would be the best route to take and I plan on it.

Truly, even though I did request ideas and suggestions, I was more looking for anyone who has experienced the same thing and what if anything helped them. I am currently frustrated from the pain and it is affecting my ability to workout. I was simply hoping for a few 'bandaid' suggestions' in the meantime.

There are a lot of forums in here that request advice where the responses are only opinions and personal experiences and not always from a professional or expert. And even when it is a professional response, often no two will give the same answer.

This is the beauty of MFP...it's a community and in my experience very helpful. And when people offer advice they do so graciously and I will graciously accept it...and then decide if it's right for me.

What you fail to realize is, is the fact MFP has a policy regarding the subject matter you have..... what helps others may not be the same for you. Should you take someone's advice and do what they did, you could risk further injury - even physicians will tell you the same thing. And, I work for over 300 physicians right now so I speak from professional experience.

Until you have real, true medical services performed, whether its xrays, or a physical evaluation from a real doctor, youre not going to get the full benefit of someone else's experience because your injury could very well be much worse than others..... Dont risk it by doing it here. That is not a smart thing to do.

A cold, wet tissue (dip in in cold water) placed just on the tender spot that hurts for about a minute will take the heat out of the damaged area and usually reduces the pain.

Thank you...I appreciate your concern and advice...:) Now if you could only offer an approved balm or snake oil that would do the trick even temporarily I would 'feel' so much better...lol

I am being serious - there is nothing funny about people saying they have an injury and they are coming to a weightloss website to talk about this when they should be consulting with a medical physician.

Again, I appreciate your input and I hear you Cramernh, I really do...I'm not sure you are hearing me. I appreciate that "had" I specifically asked for Doctor's advice about something related or unrelated to exercise or especially for a diagnosis, which I did not, I might be crossing the line. I asked for suggestions in the fitness and "exercise" forum, because my exercise is being affected. I hope you can appreciate that.

This same thing happened to me. You probably have a pulled muscle. Mine started about 2 weeks in to a "new" workout regime. I hate saying it, but it lasted for a couple of MONTHS! I even got an MRI, which came up with zilch. I had to refrain from working out for a couple of weeks. If I don't stretch really well before my workout, it will come back. The only thing that would help ease the pain for me was a similar concoction your Dr. prescribed. I did get some massages, which helped, but the best way to get rid of it is to let it rest. I feel your pain, I promise! Just make sure you stretch really really well before and after you workout. Now that i do that, it hasn't come back. Sorry for you pain!

    klpruitt7,
Thank you...I am stretching as I type and will continue until I leave for the gym...lol. I'm a lightweight exerciser...lol, I said lightweight (I wish) but I'd hate have to stop the little that I do. I'm enjoying it except for the pain so I'm going to try everying (within reason, of course) and hope it helps. It's amazing how much the shoulders are used no matter what type of exercise is being done...especially dance. I appreciate your response and glad to hear that it worked for you.
