    Hi everyone!

Don't I look great? I've lost weight, can you tell? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell me I'm thinner, or I shall crawl into a hole and die..............................

Lie through your teeth. I don't care..............

  • Thanks for the replies. She walked a lot taller after my 'lie'. That's what counts at the end of the day

The dress she was wearing did her no favours either - it accentuated every curve - but I wasn't going to tell her that either

I want to add a question. When an overweight person makes a jab at them-self for being fat what do you say? I always feel awkward in that situation. If they were not fat I would say something like "oh be quiet, you look amazing", but when they are it's just an awkward silence.

Depends on the overweight person. A lot of overweight women in particular make these jokes. I'm guessing that most of them are looking for an "oh be quiet, you look amazing," but some of us aren't.

Some of us are very comfortable in our skin and the fat rolls underneath it and are just making good, honest fun of ourselves. I call myself "fatty" all the time. And you know what? I'm 5'11" and 273 lbs. My vital signs are great, but nobody in their right mind would describe me as either petite or slender! That's just reality and it's okay to be real. Not HURTFUL, but real.

"Oh be quiet, you look amazing" is the last fake thing I want to hear out of a friend's mouth. Maybe laughter and commisserating over your own self image issues would be more appropriate. "I don't wanna hear it. You can lose weight. I have to live with this SCHNOZ forever or until I find myself a sugar daddy to pay for a nose job!" You could even suggest doing something active together and put in some quality time.

I would never ask that question of someone and it's never been asked of me. What a way to put someone on the spot, and very rude!

    Definitely.
I might have answered that question by saying "you look really cute" today or something like that.

Which would then interpret to mean, "I haven't noticed"

    OP - I get where you're coming from - I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, but I am a TERRIBLE liar.

I would probably try to make light of the situation and offer my services as a human scale by suggesting a piggyback ride.

ETA: the Waffler has this 'talent' of making an awkward situation even more awkward. :embarassed:
