How to measure inches

I was just wondering what kind of tape measure to use if I want to measure inches lost? I have seen people use them, Im just not sure where I would buy them. Any ideas?

I use the tape measurer that I use for sewing. But you can get one anywhere- Target, Wal-Mart, grocery store.

I bought one of these so I could do the measurements by myself. It works pretty well.
