Advice for post-workout knee pain?

I'm im my early 40s and just getting back into the gym routine. I walk a lot with my dog, bike to and from work a few times a week, and have been using the elliptical trainer at the gym two or three times a week. But often, an hour or so after biking or using the gym machine, my left knee hurts. It doesn't hurt WHILE I'm working out or riding, but usually later that night or the next day.
Some of it comes with being in my fourth decade, I suppose, but I'm wondering if I should consider different exercises or machines that would go easer on my knee? Or should I be doing something after I work out to help?
Any advice?

Best idea is a visit to physio, who can properly assess and diagnose what's going on - as someone who has suffered from decades of knee pain, a good physio is a great asset.0
