Hi!
7 times out of 10, my evening meal will be accompanied with mashed potato.
Now this has not affected my weight loss, I have lost nearly 50lb whilst still eating lots and lots of potato!
But I am getting slightly bored of a meal that consists of protein, veg & potato.
So I am asking for your help MFP - help me find a substitute for mashed potato

Cauliflower potatoes they are actually pretty good and very healthy. Here is a link to the video I found the first time I figured out how to make them, but there are many different ways. I cant believe I actually like them because I hate cauliflower. Enjoy! Oh and baked yam fries are a good potato substitute as well.

Gotta agree I love sweet potato too!!! They make great fries as apposed to regular ones, too, you can bake them instead of deep fry them, and even add any spices you want!!! Broccoli is a good pick too, and is great steamed with a "butter" or "cheese" sauce. I have the sauce names in brackets because you can easily use a dab of maragine or butter spray or melted cheese spread for the sauces, and they're only suggestions. Some of my favorites!!! :happy:0

quinoa, sweet potato, brown rice, beans0

Baked, Twice Baked, Au Gratin...
There are so many options available for the potato other than mashed.
Honestly, I couldn't give any better advice than what was already given.0 -
try rice noodles instead of a potato, you could make a cold sesame noodle salad, yum. or my favorite, basmati rice with peas and cumin....0

Depending on your area there may be some other... "alternative" root vegetables you could try. There's a hispanic grocery store not far from my apartment that keeps yuca, two or three varieties of sweet potato, jicama and some others I haven't tried yet. Plantains are getting more common now too, since they're a type of banana you'll probably find them in the same area, but they're starchy and can be treated similarly.
Talk to the produce manager at your market. They know their stuff.0 -
If you're looking for a starch, you could try an actual grain- rice, couscous, quinoa.
Or a starchy vegetable, such as a variety of squash, corn, sweet potato.
Browse through the recipe forum and you'll find some great ideas.0 -
Thanks for all your help
