Thyroid issues causing weight loss struggles? Please comment

So, each day I complete my food and excersize and when I do it states if you ate this way for 4 weeks you would way XXX.X...well I have been eating and excersizing this way for a while and guess what I haven't lost more than 5 pounds! The reason I believe (and my doc!) is that with my Thyroid issuse (Hashimoto's) I also have a very low core body temp (never over 97.4). Until I get my core temp up losing weight unless I am eating less than 1200 calories is pretty dismal. Does anyone else have these issues and if so have you overcome them? I am looking for some inspriation or just other people with similar issues. I will continue to eat healthy and excersize and hope to not gain any more weight. I just have to be sooo careful. Looking for any and all comments!

Yup, been there, done that, still struggling! My weight loss is slower than most, frustrating as that is, but it's totally possible to lose weight with thyroid issues. And that line is complete baloney for most people, even those with no metabolism issues.
I'm actually eating more and losing weight more consistently than before. Surprisingly enough. I DO NOT eat all my exercise calories back, but I do eat some. 1/2 to 2/3 of my exercise calories, I eat back. I try to net ~1100-1200. On days I don't exercise, I try to eat less in general.
It's all about finding what works for you. Correct treatment for your thyroid definitely helps. But not as much as just finding what works for you. Good luck!0 -

Been there as well. I have no thyroid due to cancer so my levels are intentionally kept high to prevent the cancer from returning. You would think that would be great but it has the opposite effect. i am sluggish and tired all of the time and have a hard time getting the weight off. I increased my calories to 1800 a day and I lift weights and do cardio and that has really seemed to help a lot. Good luck0

Hi Moejo.
I too have a Thyroid issue. It is extremely hard for me to get people to understand that eventhough I'm really active, it is a challenge to lose weight. I have Hypothyroidism which means that my metabolism is really low. I fell into a mild state of depression and gained even more weight. But half the battle is in our minds. I am determined to stick to a low calorie (1200) eating plan. I don't believe in "diets" I believe in "healthy eating". Some days are discouraging but I'm in this for the long hall.0 -
I had my thyroid removed a year ago. For a year before that my metabolism was in the tank. I was fatigued all the time, and I wasn't processing food right. I would eat lunch and fall asleep 10 minutes later because the mere act of digestion would wipe me out. I was never like that before. And now that I'm on thyroid meds, I'm able to lose weight like a normal person.
P.S. don't pay any attention to that "If you do this shiit you'll weight blah, blah" It LIES!0 -
I am eating 1500 a day when I excersize and 1400 a day when I don't. I have been dealing with this for 5 years (that I have taken meds anyway). I definately want to stay with the healthy eating etc. I stay pretty positive just somedays I wish it would come off a little easier. I am also in menapause so, that is not helping either. But, I am in this for the long haul thanks for all of your comments!0

Yep. There is a thyroid disorder group here:
http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/753-hypothyroidism-and-hyperthyroidism
I went to a nutritionist who told me I shouldn't eat back all my exercise calories -- because when I did, I was actually gaining.
so now every day it says if you ate like this you would weigh 145 and of course I still weigh 155 and am STRUGGLING to get down to 150.
I still use MFP to track my calorie and nutrient goals, but the nutrionist said, for me at least, I have to be more cautious with my intake --- even though I exercise quite a bit.
That said, I still exercise hard because its good for my mental health and because it makes me feel good. Good luck to you.0 -

Hi Kimmie, I know what you mean. I prefer to walk outdoors for exercise but our weather isn't cooperating so, I just am practicing yoga. I don't eat back my calories any more either. I do like to log keeps me accountable I it is good to watch the sodium and sugar etc. Just doing what is good for us. I can't imagine how bad I would feel if I didn't do anything at all. Thanks for your comments0 -
You may want to look into intermittent fasting. I have a friend with hashimotos, and he just started IF+weights a couple months ago, and has been dropping 0.5-1% body fat per week. He has already looks noticeably more fit, and it's only been maybe 2 months. Hope this is helpful.0
