I'm new to MFP as of 3 days ago.
So I was watching this video online today about healthy carbohydrate choices. It said that whole wheat bread was actually terrible for you! All it does is ultimately turn into sugar (as does orange juice and artificial sweeteners eg, splenda) and then gets stored as fat!

The video mentioned some healthy carb options because we all need carbs in our diets to maintain a balanced diet. Some of the things mentioned were spelt bread, sprouted grain bread, rice bread millet, and quinoa. (I googled/wiki'd all of them to get a better understanding of what they were..I had heard of millet and quinoa before but wanted to know more..)

My grocery store didn't carry spelt bread and I wanted to give it a try so I went to the local natural food mart. I ended up picking up spelt bread, quinoa, millet, coconut water, coconut milk, and coconut oil. (I also found out from the video that coconut oil is a healthy fat option..and coconut is high in potassium!)
Anyways..has anyone tried any of these things? What are the carbs/grains you eat? (besides fruits and veggies)

Thanks-
Caroline
Add me since I'm new :) I could use all the motivation I can get! I'll motivate as well!

First of all, unless you have problems digesting gluten or some other disease or disorder, whole wheat bread is not terrible for you.

I get my carbs from vegetables, fruits and whole grains. I try to eat more minimally processed grains like brown rice, quinoa, bulgar wheat, barley and oats than bread and pasta. But I do still eat whole grain pasta and breads and wraps. I've been eating them for years and I've made it to 50 yo without any disease, despite a strong family history of diabetes, heart and vascular disease.

Just avoid the overly processed white breads, rice and pasta and added sugars. That stuff has little nutritional value.

About the only bread I eat are Bagel Thins. Usually only eating half at a time, potatoes very sparingly at 1/2 cup at a time, ocassional rice, preferably instant brown, and very little else. Rarely do I eat pasta. It's got to be at a church dinner, etc, Oh and once in a while a spoon of stuffing on special days like holidays. No cookies, cake (only sugar free angel food), pie or bread. This may seem a little radical but it's working and if I don't do it this way, I know me. Good luck.

Sadly there is an awful lot of misinformation about nutrition floating around on the Internet.

I'm a runner and I love carbs, all kinds of carbs; pasta, bread, rice, potatoes , you name it I eat it (less of it now than I used to but you get the picture)

The only reason I can think of that anyone would want to avoid any particular food would be allergies or sensitivities, or in the case of gluten if they had celiac disease. There are no bad foods as long as they're eaten in moderation (even a McBurger & fries every now and then won't kill you)
