How much does food cost where you are?

Noticed that Iowa has some good prices I guess xD Would like to see how much you are paying where you all live!

Just list a food item and its price! Or more than one :] Lets compare!

I live in Ames, Iowa

Strawberries are $1.98 at walmart, or $1.19 at aldi's
5 pound bag of red potatoes are around $3
Silk unsweetened almond milk $3.19
Asparagus $1.69

I'm not even gonna bother posting. Just add a couple of $ extra for all of them and then a 9.75% state tax.

I'm in Langley, B.C. and at the grocery store right now Strawberries are still 2.50 IF you can get them on sale, if not it's 4-5$. Asparagus is also quite pricey here.
My Rice Dream rice milk is 2.99
a bag of 3 bunches of Romaine is about 3$

I am excited that it's spring now as I'll be able to go buy at the produce/fruit stands (I work in an agricultural area and a lot of farmers have stands at the edge of their property that you can just stop and buy direct from them, there's even free range eggs and grass fed beef on our road)

    so expensive. @_@
    i live in hawaii.
everything cost more because a lot of it is shipped.
thats why i buy my veggies at the farmers market.

i get 4 lbs of ground turkey at costco for about 15 dollars.

strawberries at the grocery at 3-4 dollars. i can get them cheaper if i buy them from a local farm though (like 2 dollars)

at the farmers market i can usually get 2 weeks worth of veggies (A LOT for me) for maybe 15 dollars though. lots of agriculture here.

im in nw indiana and my prices are about the same as yours. Our walmart price matches to anything in a 3 hour drive from here, so we get food really really low each week PMing the sale prices to the grocery stores that are too far for us to drive to. But the prices are similar, the potatoes are about $1 cheaper and asparagus is usually $.99 or so.

Milk (almost every week since june) $1.99 a gallon
    Eggs $.79 to $.99 a dozen
    Butter $1.29 to 1.39 a lb
Avocado's right now $.69 to $.99 each, will go down to $.19 in the summer
Cereal $.87 to $1.29 a box, but i wont buy for more than $1 a box with coupons

    $1.10 a sandwich at McDonald's. All I can afford.

If you can cook, a bag of rice ($1.79) and beans ($1.49) will feed you far longer and MUCH better than McD's - just sayin'

Strawberries are like, £2 ($3.21) a punnet pretty much everywhere
    McDonalds cheeseburger is £1.29 ($2.07)
There's a place round here where you can get a steak (8oz I think), chips (fries) and a drink for £7.25 ($11.64) but that's the cheapest I've seen it, elsewhere you'd usually pay about £12 ($19.26) just for the steak & chips
A can of pepsi is usually about 80p ($1.26)

    4L of milk is $4.59
pound of gala apples is usually around $1.59, though we catch sales for $1.29 or 99 cents all the time.
    Dozen eggs are $2.59
Loaf of good bread is $3. White bread is $2.

No sales tax on food, but there is 13% tax on junk food.

Strawberries are 2.77 at walmart here. Plus there's the lovely 13% sales tax on just about everything that's not considered "necessary"

I live near Knoxville TN. I shop usually at Kroger and Aldi's but will be migrating to Publix when it opens this summer. Here are the usual things I get weekly.

    Kroger:
SIlk pure coconut milk $3.19 ($2.50 when on sale I stock the heck up)
Yoplait yogurt .70 (when .60 I stock up)
    Bananas .55/lb
I got a 3lb bag of boneless skinless chicken breasts for $4 last week, was on a 3 day sale. Bummed I didn't get 2 bags.
    Gallon 1% milk $3.09

    Aldi's:
Strawberries .99 (got them for .49 about 3 weeks ago)
    Broccoli .89 (1lb package)
    Cauliflower .89
We get all our snacky items here (granola bars etc)

That is about 3.67 here! I have been taking the bus :3 lol
  • I live in a small village in central Mexico. The Driscoll strawberry farms are near by. I can get a plastic grocery bag full of freshly picked strawberries for about $1.50usd. Fruits and veggies are really cheap here and fresh - year round. Even the meat from the local farmer is fresh. I'm thankful to live somewhere where I can afford to eat healthy, unlike when I lived in the US and spent an entire summer eating ramen noodles so my teenage sons could eat healthy.

Holy moly! I actually was considering moving to the US (I work online and get paid in dollars anyway) and I feel like I could live like a *king*! And I looked for normal jobs and they don't even pay much less than the ones here in the UK so you must all have SO MUCH SPARE CASH (comparably)!!! Although free healthcare is a bonus :) and if you ever feel bad about how much everything costs, check out how much it costs in Sweden/Norway - like £8 ($12.84) for one pint of beer...

I live in southern Louisiana. At WalMart a gallon of milk is right around $3.98, 18 eggs are $1.98, and a bag of gala apples are between $3.49 and $3.99. I can get the little steamer bags of frozen veggies for $1-2, depending on sales. Strawberries have just started coming down to about $1.99. They'll get even cheaper through the summer, but then go back to $3-4 in the fall. Our "farmer's market" (which is only about 1/2-2/3 local produce, depending on the season) is close to WM in prices, maybe a little less, but the quality is better.

Gas is hovering around $3.80, on average. Boo.
  • stores are the worst. food is so expensive and always poor quality :P blech!
I get a farm basket through CSA (community supported agriculture) a box costs me about $35. We make ours last just shy of 2 weeks for the 2 of us, though we do buy dry goods like rice, polenta, oats, and beans (about $15 week). my food is farm fresh organic blah blah and picked the same day of delivery. today we got :

    12 eggs
    1lb whole wheat bolero flour
    1 bunch small turnips
    1 bunch easter egg radishes
    8oz raisins
    5 oranges
    3 oz dill
    1 HUGE fennel
    1 bunch green garlic
1 lb stir fry greens (mixed greens like mustard, kale, and collards etc)
    6 oranges
    2 lbs lettuce
    2 lbs spinach

we usually also hit the farmers market friday mornings with about $30 and buy : 1lb potatoes, 4 pints strawberries (seasonal), 2 lbs stone fruit (seasonal), 1 lb sausage, 1 lb assorted mushrooms, 1/2 lb almonds, 2 bunches broccoli, tomatoes (seasonal)

total monthly cost: $220 then maybe another $50-$70 for fun stuff like beer wine and dairy

**edit: i live in california, san francisco area**

I'm pretty sure we have some of the highest prices in Canada, aside from Nunavut, the Yukon and the Northwest territories. I know for sure we have one of the highest taxes, 15%.

    4 L of milk - $6.00-$7.00
    5 lb of potatoes - $4.00
Haddock fillets - $5.00-$6.00 a pound (even though we're literally surrounded by water full of fish)

Central Nebraska...we have cheap corn...other than that we are subject to 5.5% state tax plus 1.5% local tax. Then the cost of freighting food here gets added in. It gets a little pricey when the average wage here is about $9 / hr.
Thank god I hunt and butcher about 75% of all my meat. Venison does get old after a while. I have a friend who raises hogs, so I pay about 25 cents a pound for them, if I butcher it myself. A loaf of wheat bread is $2.25, and a gallon of 2% milk is around 3.85 at the local Wal-mart ( 25 miles away is local to me )

Depends on where you live, I drive 50 miles round trip everyday to work, no public transport, and a P.O.S. Prius doesn't do so well in Nebraska winters.
