Hi!
So my Dr. has put me on a mandatory low carb diet (30g a meal). Turns out, my body doesn't handle them too well.

Any one have some meal suggestions?

I am on a very low carb diet as well, due to a metabolic syndrome (Yeah, I don't handle carbs well either) I do 20g a day. Sometimes I get up to around 30g, but not often. Also, keep in mind when you do a low carb diet, you look at the carb count and then you subtract the fiber (and sugar alcohols) for the net carb # and then you count the net carb as your carb.

But it depends on which low carb your Dr has put you on. Low Glycemic? Atkins? South Beach? I currently do Atkins (though Mr Dr wishes it was South Beach, but I find Atkins easier for me to do with better results)

I eat a lot of salads. Best part about it is I can have real Ranch Dressing (with 1g carb per serving, which is 2 tablespoons, but I find that it's plenty) I usually add some sort of meat - chicken, beef)

For B'fast I eat nearly the same thing every single day - 2 eggs (Over easy, or scrambled with spinach, cream cheese mixed in) and Morning Star Farms Sausage Patties (these are vegetarian although I am not vegetarian, I love them!)

Dinner is chicken baked some way, sometimes I use sauces that are low carb, or beef of some sort and always a side of veggies (I love french cut green beans, a little higher in carbs, but don't forget the NET carbs)

There is a low carb group. You should join that, it has a lot of meal suggestions and recipes. I think Laura_beau is the moderator.

For anyone on low carb, and looking for recipe ideas, check out kalynskitchen.com. The recipes are geared towards south beach, but they all have low glycemic indexes and every one I have tried is delicious.

Btw i am not at all in anyway tied to that site, just someone that loves to cook and is a big fan of that site!

What to eat ? Nice portions of meat and fish with green veg. Mmm. Cheese omelette. Bacon and egg.

You're going to be eating a lot of oils and fats if carbs are restricted. 100g of protein and 100g of carbs give you 800 calories so the rest are fat. Stay away from diet things, low fat things etc.

30 g carbs per meal isn't all that low. As the previous poster suggested, it gives you plenty of possibilities for nice protein & vegetable meals. All you need to watch are starchy vegetables (potatoes, winter squash, yam, that kind of thing) because they will put you over, but otherwise any vegetable and most fruit--high sugar fruit such as pineapple, mango, banana etc. you need to be careful with.

Oops - I missed the 30g per meal. Mine is 20g per day.

30g is not bad AT ALL! And very, very do-able!

That would work well with the South Beach friendly recipes. If you need some recipes I have a bunch posted on Pinterest:

30 grams per meal is 90 per day. At that level you have lots of options, including the more sugary fruits and many grains. I also have a Pinterest board for lower-carb meals (or things that I think could be made lower with some tweaking)

and have gotten lots of great ideas by searching for South Beach, Atkins and paleo/primal blogs

    Good luck!

I agree, 30 g per meal is not bad at all. I have been following a low carb diet for almost 2 weeks now and its been working out quite nicely, especially for weight loss. If you would like, add me and you can check out my diary for meal plans that will easily keep you under the 30 g.

Thanks! I'll look up the facebook and also thanks for going over the carb count! I didn't know that. My Dr. didnt put me on a specific diet, besides just 30g a meal.

30g a meal isn't even that low. I have 30-40g a day. Bacon is your friend.

With that many carbs you can use a lot of the diabetic cookbooks too. The key thing is to make sure you are eating healthy carbs. I eat loads of non-starchy veggies. since I try to stay around 30-35 net per day I limit my fruit. A lot of what you need to do is just make sure you look at your nutritional info and are aware of what choices you are making.
  • Thank everyone! This was helpful.
And yes, I know 30g a meal is not THAT bad...I just wanted some more meal suggestions because it is new for me. Also, I get really sick of only veggies as a side.
